Drop in the Bucket

Have you ever seen a portrayal of the Japanese (or is it Chinese?) water torture? You know. They strap you to a chair and they have a bucket full of water that they empty by dropping a small bit on your forehead. For HOURS drip, drip, drip, drip, you get the idea.

Having a son who is getting married and having a baby is much the same.
"Mom, we're going to have a baby"--drip
"Mom, we're in financial trouble"--drip
"Mom, we need a place to live"--drip drip drip (admit it. A baby, son and DIL in your house? Triple drip at least)
"Mom, the date is December 7" (does this date sound familiar? yes. the one that will live in infamy)--Drip. (It’s Thanksgiving Day. Earns another three drips)
"We asked Uncle Scott to do the ceremony. He say he will but not until we do pre-marriage counseling"--half drip
"Mom, forgot to schedule the counseling." Drip, drip, drip
"Mom, we're getting married Dec 15" (its now December 7) Drip drip drip
"Mom, we're getting married in January" drip
"We’ve decided we’re not sure when we’re getting married" Drip

(I have played games and messed with dates and I had friends who were waiting on me for a Christmas party. So December 2 I finally picked December 21.)

"Mom, we’re getting married either the 21 or 22 of December. Can you call and reserve the church?" (It's Dec 11.) Drip, drip, drip, drip, drip.

I have had enough. "What time on the 22nd do you want to get married."
"Well we haven't decided between the 21st and the 22nd"
"No, son you do not understand. What time on THE 22nd DO YOU WANT TO GET MARRIED?"

"Well I don't know. Ask her. I'll have her call you."--Drip, drip, drip, drip.

"Hi.”
“What time is the ceremony?"
"I don't know what do you think?"drip, drip, drip, drip, drip

"The wedding is 2pm on the 22nd at the church,” I say in exasperation.
"Okay. What about a dinner?"--drip drip, drip

"Pot luck."
"What?" she sounds bewildered

"Pot luck. Each guest brings a dish. Then after the ceremony we will all buffet it and get to know each other."
"Okay. Bye."

"Mom, she needs a dress."--Drip, drip, drip
"We need a cake but no money or time to order one."--Dripping intensifies.
"I’ll design and make it. What is your theme/colors?"
"I don’t know. Ask her."

The bucket is half empty.

"Have you thought of the wedding theme?"
Large pause. "Red and White."
"What about a theme?"
Long pause. "I don’t know." Drip, drip, drip

After my suggestions, the wedding is now Christmas theme--big surprise. Poinsettias, ("what are those?"--rapid fire dripping) one on each side of the pulpit. The hall will be decorated in Christmas lights lightly twisted with red tulle netting. The tables to have red and white cloths layered with white lace. Tableware--yep you guessed it, poinsettias, red and white plastic ware. Punch, cokes, tea and coffee for drinking. Now if I could just get the RSVPs so I know how many are coming and who is bringing what.

What all do I have left to do?

1. Help bride find dress
2. Buy stuff for cake
3. Bake said cake
4. Decorate said cake
5. Buy decorations for church and hall
6. Guest list
7. Invite guests
8. Collect RSVP from guests
9. Coordinate menu with guests
10. Get building key
11. Decorate building
12. Set up food and tables
13. Have the ceremony

After all this I then have to clean up our mess. Get the church and hall back in order for services the next day.

Oh! And my Christmas party? The girls were sweet enough that they are going to come and help me decorate the church. Then we're going to party.

Did I mention the remodel? The house. Yes. In progress now. Then there is Christmas. Christmas dinner menu. Christmas dinner cooking/baking. January is baby arrival and baby shower--not sure which order yet. Then there is the sweet sixteen for my daughter in February. My DH's 50th--also in February.

Then there are the book releases that need revisions. Also there is the book that is on option that needs revisions when I can get to it, for a summer slate.

If I can hold on until March I have a chance. Slim, mind you, but a chance of surviving. PRAY FOR ME!!!
