Are you Scared yet?

Strange and unusual phobias

Did you know that there are over 500 listed phobias? 516 to be exact. Some of them are perfectly reasonable—snakes, spiders, heights, enclosed spaces that list is extensive. Then there are the more odd ones. Here are just a few:

1. Ablutophobia- Fear of washing or bathing. (I’ve met…no smelled some people suffering this condition)

2. Botanophobia- Fear of plants (Anything to keep from mowing the lawn, right?)

3. Cacophobia- Fear of ugliness. (I guess I’m cacophobic…)

4. Eisoptrophobia- Fear of mirrors or of seeing oneself in a mirror. (I’m this too. Why? See above reply…)

5. Defecaloesiophobia- Fear of painful bowels movements. (What can I say about this one? No. WAY too easy)

6. Ecophobia- Fear of home. (I think all parents have suffered this from one time or another. Especially when their child is a teen)

7. Erotophobia- Fear of sexual love or sexual questions. (???!!!!)

8. Gamophobia- Fear of marriage. (Again, I knew people like this…most of the guys I dated…)

9. Anuptaphobia- Fear of staying single. (Talk about your polar opposites!)

10. Hadephobia- Fear of hell. (Preachers are good at instilling this phobia on their flock)

11. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia- Fear of long words. (So I guess supercalifristicexpeallidocious is the wrong thing to say, huh?)

12. Homilophobia- Fear of sermons. (These people are the ones who have attempted to save themselves from Hadephobia)

13. Ithyphallophobia- Fear of seeing, thinking about or having an erect penis.(???!!!)

14. Malaxophobia- Fear of love play. (So I guess the above would immediately bring on this phobia?)

Yeah I put up 14—sue me...

Next week we'll explore some of my phobias. Till then be healthy and healthy. And try not to let the little things scare you...

Huggles,
Donica

HAHAHAHAH!! I love these, and I *love* the irony that the phobia for the fear of long words...is a long word. :P

OMG, these are awesome! I'm pretty sure there's an identified syndrome for everything out there!

Um, that's messed up! Anne Rice had a fear that when you die, you're not really dead but conscious and trapped in a body that is dead. No name for that, coz she's just weird!

Ah phobias.

First time I went to the ocean at age 8 I said I had "foamaphobia" fear of the oceans waves. Yeah. I was a bit precocious.

Great list :)

I don't think I have any phobias.

I have a phobia of the phone, but I don't know what it's called, LOL.

Fascinating list! Happy TT!

Wild. I ought to create some characters with these fears. Just sprinkle them throughout the city... it could be interesting. Hmmm.

Cool list. The things people are afraid of. Mine aren't realy fears, except perhaps the really tall buildings, just profound dislikes. :) Have a great weekend.

ROFL!! These are awesome! Malaxophobia just seems like a great one for a romance novel. :)

My husband will back me on this - I actually said 'Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia' out loud. It was kind of slow and in a monotone, but it did count as one word. I'm with Becka on this one. Is there a fear of irony?
