Since witches and Halloween are so ingrained with each other, for the entire month of October I will be posting informational tidbits about both subjects.
A little Halloween history:
Some historians believe that Druids were the first ones to celebrate Halloween. They celebrated Samhain, which was an end of harvest season and also the time to honor the dead on November 1st. This became known as All Saints Day by the Catholic Church as a way to integrate the pagan beliefs into their own for easier conversion. (Of course there is the day of the dead on November 2nd, but that’s for a later discussion.) Anyway, the night before was known as Eve of All Hallows, then All Hallow’s Eve, Hallow Eve, which became Hallow e’en and before you know it there was Halloween!
Trick or treating was originated on the eve of Samhain. People left food on their doorsteps to keep hungry spirits from entering the house. Festivalgoers began dressing as ghosts, witches, and goblins to prevent the wandering spirits from bothering them.
Keep checking back for more Halloween tidbits!
In other news, I’ve got a case of the nervous jitters. Not only because of Storm’s debut but because Right now I’ve got three submissions hanging in limbo and I’m anxious to hear on any one of them! I’m still waiting to hear on the submission I sent off 8 weeks ago. The website says that it can take 8-12 weeks for the submission to be read, considered and rejected/accepted. I’m hoping I hear soon, but now news is good news, yes? Then there are the novella submissions that I have yet to hear about! ARGH! I hate waiting; I’m not the most patient of people!
Well I’ve got more work to do and I’ve got to get it done!
Huggles until next time!
Donica
